Karuna asks TN cabinet to pass resolution on mercy pleas

Chennai: DMK President M Karunanidhi today demanded that the Tamil Nadu Cabinet pass a unanimous resolution urging President Pratibha Patil to reconsider the clemency petitions of three death row convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

"I congratulate them (AIADMK Government) for taking the initiative in passing a resolution in the Assembly after witnessing an upsurge among Tamils. But it is important that the cabinet pass a similar resolution," he told reporters on the sidelines of a private function.

The state Assembly on 30 August adopted unanimously a resolution moved by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa urging the President to reconsider rejection of the clemency petitions of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, facing the gallows

After the rejection of the mercy petitions, prison authorities had fixed 9 September as the date for the execution of the three, lodged in Vellore Central Jail, but the Madras High Court on a petition from the convicts has stayed for eight weeks their hanging.

The convicts have cited "undue" delay in disposing their mercy pleas as ground for commutation of the capital punishment.

Jayalalithaa had charged Karunanidhi with adopting double standards by taking up the issue now while it was his cabinet that had recommended to the Governor in April, 2000 to reject the mercy petitions of the three.

Asked about the continuing arrests of DMK men on land-grabbing charges, Karunanidhi said the police action reminded him of Emergency.
Alleging that the arrests of DMK men were "well-planned", he said whether this would affect the party"s prospects in the coming local body polls would be known after the elections.

Karuna asks Sonia to save Rajiv Gandhi killers

2011-08-28 21:52:00

Chennai, Aug 27 (IBNS) Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) patriarch M Karunanidhi has appealed to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to 'save' three convicts, who will be hanged on Sept 9, for assassinating former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.

"Congress which is heading the central government and its leader Sonia Gandhi should come forward to save the three lives," Karunanidhi said in a statement.

"There is an emergent need for us to take all possible efforts to save their lives on humanitarian ground and the spirit of forget and forgive," he said.

Meanwhile, security at Vellore prison has been stepped up a day after Prison Superintendent R Arivudainambi on Friday received the official communication to carry out the execution of the three convicts- Murugan, Perarivalan and Santhan-on Sept 9.

A three-tier security has been deployed while police have cordoned off the area and restricted public movement.

Already pro-Tamil groups and many political parties have started agitating against the execution.

PMK (Paattali Makkal Katchi) founder S Ramadoss and MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) leader Vaiko have requested Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to intervene in the case and stop the execution.

On August 11, President Pratibha Patil rejected their mercy petition.

Rajiv Gandhi, the sixth Prime Minister of India, was killed at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, India on 21 May 1991. At least 14 others were also killed.

Gandhi´s assassination was carried out by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, also known as Dhanu, who was found after investigations to be a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber.

What if we had passed resolution on Afzal Guru like TN, asks Omar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweets on the double standards of death penalty.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweets on the double standards of death penalty when Tamil Nadu assembly passes a resolution asking President Pratibha Patil to review her mercy pleas rejection of Rajiv Gandhi killers.

Srinagar: Trouble in the valley seems to be brewing again after a relative calm over the death sentence awarded to Muhammad Afzal Guru who was convicted in the Parliament attack case. It started with chief minister Omar Abdullah's tweet on Wednesday: "If Jammu and Kashmir assembly had passed a resolution similar to the Tamil Nadu one for Afzal Guru would the reaction have been as muted? I think not". The tweet followed the unanimous resolution passed on Tuesday by the Tamil Nadu assembly, asking President Pratibha Patil to review her rejection of the mercy petitions of the three who are on death row for killing former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Omar's tweet set a buzz in Jammu and Kashmir with both separatists and hardline political parties hardening their stand on Guru's death sentence even as the national political parties criticised the CM's comment.

While the separatists have termed the idea of a resolution a sham, the mainstream politicians reacted angrily to the response to Omar's tweet from national political parties. A senior National Conference (NC) leader said New Delhi would not have tolerated had the Jammu and Kashmir assembly passed a resolution similar to the one by Tamil Nadu.

BJP calls Omar Abdullah's remarks on Afzal Guru 'unfortunate'

BJP Wednesday termed as "unfortunate" Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's comments on Afzal Guru and maintained that a responsible leader like him should not speak the "language" of Hurriyat leaders.

Abdullah tweeted if J&K Assembly had passed a resolution against the death sentence given to Afzal Guru as was done by the Tamil Nadu Assembly for the killers of Rajiv Gandhi, the reaction would not have been as muted as it is now.

Guru is on death row and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has recommended to President Pratibha Patil that the mercy petition filed on behalf of Guru, a Parliament attack convict, be rejected.

"This is a sensitive issue and Omar Abdullah's comments on it are unfortunate. Had a Hurriyat leader made such remarks it was understandable but a responsible chief minister should not have said so. At a time when the Supreme Court has already given the death sentence, raking up this debate is unfortunate," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

Another party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad insisted that any person who seeks to break India's sovereignty and integrity or kills a former Prime Minister and given a death sentence should be executed.

"BJP is clearly of the view that all those who have been given capital punishment after due process of law, including confirmation by the Supreme Court and whose clemency plea has been rejected by the President, then the capital punishment should be executed," he said.

Amritsar, May 31
The SGPC has decided to approach the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC), seeking its intervention to save the life of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar whose mercy petition was rejected by President Pratibha Patil last week. It has also decided a file a review petition before the President.

Addressing the media after a meeting of Sikh organisations called by the SGPC at Teja Singh Samundari Hall here today, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said they would approach the UNHRC to garner support for Bhullar at the international level. To mobilise support in the state, he said all SGPC members and SAD MLAs had been directed to ask the village panchayats in their constituencies to pass resolutions in favour of commuting Bhullar's death sentence.

These resolutions would form the memorandum to be submitted to the President, urging her to review her decision on the death penalty.

He said Sikhs in large numbers would gather at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali on June 20 from where they would proceed to present a memorandum to Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil, seeking Bhullar's release.

Makkar said an akhand path would be held at the Akal Takht on June 9. Sikhs all over the world had been asked to hold akhand path and perform "ardas" for Bhullar on June 11. Makkar said the SGPC had decided to appeal to the state government to pass a resolution in the legislative assembly in favour of commuting Bhullar's sentence and to send the same to the President.

Makkar said the five-member panel formed by the SGPC to pursue the case legally was now in New Delhi. In consultation with senior lawyers, it had decided to file a review petition before the President.

Bhullar's mother Upkar Kaur also attended the meeting. She said she was hopeful that her son would be released with the efforts of various Sikh outfits under the banner of the SGPC. She thanked the DSGMC for extending legal aid in the case. The SGPC announced all its decisions after taking her consent.
